Missing Mozilla Firefox Extensions: How to Restore Your Add-ons

After upgrading my Firefox browser to the latest version all of my Add-ons had disappeared! Well, they still appeared in the Tools > Add-ons menu but had no effect on the browser functionality. For example, I use Tab Mix Plus yet Firefox showed the standard tab bar without the extra features that TMB offers.

How to Fix Your Firefox Add-ons That Are Not Working

There’s a few steps involved in this, mainly depending on which operating system you’re using.

  1. Close Mozilla Firefox if open
  2. Find your Mozilla Firefox profile folder (details below)
  3. Delete these 3 files:
    extensions.ini
    extensions.cache
    extensions.rdf
  4. Open Mozilla Firefox and it will automatically recreate these files

Profile folders are in one of these locations, by default:

  • C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
  • C:\Windows\Profiles\<Windows login/user name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>

  • %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>

  • ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile folder>

You can find your profile in 1 of these spots (~ stands for the current user’s Home folder):

  • ~/Library/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile folder>
